It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. ‘A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion, whoever that may be, will have to pay the penalty. Brothers and sisters, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished. As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves! You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. [Galatians 5:1-15]
Did you know that you can be free right now where you are? Not tomorrow, not in a year, not if you try hard enough… but RIGHT NOW you can experience freedom! I want you to read this verse above and think about how incredible this freedom described sounds. The truth is, we all want freedom, nobody wants to be held back in any way. So why don’t we step into freedom? Well ask yourself a few questions. What is it that I want to be free from? What is getting in the way of me experiencing that freedom? Cool you’ve figured out two important parts to experiencing freedom… now lets go from there!!!
At the beginning of this verse in Galatians we are told that it is for freedom that Christ has set us free… Did you catch that? God WANTS us to live in freedom!!! Sometimes we get so bogged down by life’s major choices (what job to take, what to major in, where to live, etc.) that we miss Christ’s will for us to enjoy our freedom. So ask yourself right now, how can I enjoy the freedom I’ve been given? Of course it is great to bring God into all decisions you make, but your enjoyment of freedom is more important than getting stressed over little decisions. We are told that we must stand firm in that freedom and to not become burdened by a yolk of slavery... Meaning stand your ground and know what you are free from, claim it and believe it for yourself! If there is anything I am sure of it is that life is short. I do not want to waste any of my life carrying burdens that God set me free from when he died on the cross for me. What burdens are you carrying? Lay it down at your heavenly fathers feet. He died for you so that you could be free from carrying burdens.
Later on in this passage Paul points out in verse 7: “You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth?” I want you to stop and think about this question he is asking. What has stood in your way of freedom and fully obeying God’s calling for your life? Hebrews 12:1 tells us that “since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” We are called to completely get rid of anything that is holding us back from experiencing freedom.
The main point of this passage in Galatians is that we aren’t meant to go through being slaves to carrying the burdens of this world. Y’all we can’t fully live out God’s calling for our life when we are weighed down by problems, worries and fears. GOD SET US FREE!!! GOD WANTS US TO BE FREE! “Why?” you might ask? Because he absolutely loves you, yeah I am talking about YOU reading this. He has specific plans for you, he sees you, he wants the BEST for you! So don’t waste your life carrying burdens you were not meant to carry in the first place… BE FREE!
The last point Paul makes in this verse is that through our freedom we need to serve each other in love, and to love each other as yourself. Maybe you are reading this knowing that you already have fully experienced freedom and are really happy with your life… good that is great! But don’t stop there. Use your freedom to help others you know that might be struggling to find freedom. There is something beautiful about walking with someone to help them find freedom. It helps them know they are not alone, and I don’t know about you but for me it is so much better to go through the hard things when I know I have someone by my side fighting for the freedom with me.
So lay the burdens down. Ask God for freedom. Help someone in finding freedom. He has so much to offer you!! You’ve got this!
Lord, thank You for the freedom You have to offer me. I pray that You would help me to lay down any burdens at Your feet that I have been carrying, and that You would replace that with freedom to fully live for You. Help me to partner with others in helping them experience freedom. I love You, Lord. Amen.
