Does God give you His Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard? Consider Abraham: “He believed God, and it was credited to Him as righteousness.” [Galatians 3:5-6]

The Holy Spirit is talked about a TON in both the New Testament and in the modern Church. But how do we get Him? How do we get Him involved in our lives? How do we get the promises that come along with the Holy Spirit?

Jesus taught that the Holy Spirit was “the helper”. He said, “However, the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything. He will remind you of everything that I have ever told you.” So clearly the Holy Spirit is supposed to be involved in our lives. According to Galatians 3, Christians receive the Holy Spirit due to belief in Christ, not due to following the law. We cannot check off enough rules or accomplish a certain amount of spiritual tasks in order to earn the Holy Spirit. Christianity is not all about rules of do’s and don’t’s. Just as salvation is a free gift from God, so is the Spirit. You cannot earn anything in God’s Kingdom. God chooses to give it freely to us.

  1. What areas of your live are you trying to earn something from God? (God’s love, forgiveness, the Holy Spirit, etc.)

  2. What does it mean that God has already given you the Holy Spirit?

  3. What does the understanding that we can’t earn anything from God teach us about His character?

Father, thank You so much for Your Holy Spirit. Thank You that You choose to freely give Yourself to me, and that I don’t have to earn anything from You. Please teach me what this means for my life. Amen.
