The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists. Then the angel said to him, ‘Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. [Acts 12:6-8]
What is going on in this passage is actually insane! If you read the whole chapter, it will tell you about how Peter was in prison but there were believers who were praying for Him. Because of that, In the middle of the night he gets woken up by an ANGEL! Imagine that happening to you in the middle of the night, much less in a jail cell! The chains fall off of Peter and he follows the angel through some gates that open by themselves (I kinda picture big iron gates opening up like those automatic sliding doors). What is happening is so crazy to Peter that he actually can’t believe what is happening. He thinks its a vision.
God genuinely does crazy things!
Not only did God do miraculous things in the New Testament, but he is still doing miraculous things today. The even cooler part is that He WANTS to do miraculous things in our life! When Jesus died for us, He not only died so that we can go to heaven, but also died so that we can live our lives’ in partnership with Him. God wants to give us glimpses of what heaven will be like today! We don’t have to wait until heaven to see the breakthrough that we want to see. Instead we get to partner with God now to see the kingdom be expanded in life and the lives’ of those around us!
If you scroll down to a post from earlier in the week, you can read about how prayer actually changes things. An amazing part about this story of Peter, is that it began because “the church was earnestly praying to God for him”. One of the main ways that we get to partner with God in seeing him do crazy things is by asking Him to do those things.
Use this time to do just that for yourself and for the people and things that matter most to you. Think about situations that will only change if God did something miraculous. Pray for something in your life that actually requires for God to show up! Pray for something in someone else’s life that actually requires God to show up! God didn’t want to only show up for Peter in his jail cell, but he also wants to show up for you! After you have thought and prayed for those things, you can end with this prayer.
Jesus thank you that you are so close and interested in my life. Thank you that you want to be involved in my life and desire to know me more everyday. I pray that the things that I just thought of would actually happen. I pray that you would show up in BIG ways in my life and teach me more about you. I want MORE of you God! Amen!
