“And the Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did to Sarah as he had promised. And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him.” [Genesis 21:1-2]
This verse explains God fulfilling a promise to Sarah that seemed quite impossible. Sarah was 90 years old when God promised her that she would bare a child. Her initial reaction was laughter, but God responded by saying “is anything too hard for the Lord? (Gen. 18:14)”
It is important to know that even after God promised Sarah and her husband Abraham a child, Sarah got impatient and sent her maid to be with Abraham to make sure she would have a child. Sarah initially didn’t trust God, but through prayer and belief she persevered and had faith that God could do what he promised.
I am not a patient person, and I have the tendency to want to take control of my life. When there is a need in my life, I so easily go after it in my own way and try to find my own solution; and I honestly forget about seeking God in any of it. I have had to learn the hard way that when I try to take control of my life, I end up making matters worse. I always try to remind myself of the simple truth that God knows that is best for me.
There are two key verses that have played a huge role in believing God can fulfill impossible promises in my life:
Jeremiah 29:11 reads, “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans to prosper and not harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”
And Psalm 27:14 which is “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”
It is so good to know that God has not forgotten us, but that He has incredible and specific plans for each of us…. We just have to wait on His perfect timing.
Just like how God met Sarah’s needs and fulfilled His promise to her, He wants to do the same for you and me. We just have to let go of trying to figure it all out and simply trust that He knows what is best and that it does happen in His timing.
God help me to trust and believe You are able to do the impossible and that You want the best for my life. Help me not try to take control of my life but to give it all to You and wait on Your perfect timing. Amen.
