“Now faith brings our hopes into reality and becomes the foundation needed to acquire the things we long for. It is all the evidence required to prove what is still unseen. This testimony of faith is what previous generations were commended for. Faith empowers us to see that the universe was created and beautifully coordinated by the power of God’s words! He spoke and the invisible realm gave birth to all that is seen.” [Hebrews 11:1-3]

In Hebrews 11, Paul writes about men and women of faith that God has honored throughout history. This passage is often called the “Hall of Faith” because the ways that these people trusted God is so notable. Before we dig into how God worked in these people’s lives, I think it’s important that we understand what faith is and the role it plays in our relationships with God.

When I think about faith, I can’t help but think about the goodness of God. Because when it comes down to it, faith is just trusting God to be who He says He is, and He says He is good.

And what’s really amazing to me is that God is so good that He chooses to honor our faith. He doesn’t just ask us to trust Him but then never see anything come out of it. In these verses, Paul writes that simply trusting God sets us up to see what we’ve hoped and prayed for to come into existence. Which is really wild when you think about it that God is so kind to simply ask us to hope for good things… and then He brings those into reality.

I think sometimes we can think of God as a vending machine. We give Him a few prayers and then expect a return on those prayers immediately. But this isn’t the case. Sometimes we may have to wait a while to see those things come to life. Or He may answer our needs in a totally unexpected way.  Sometimes God might ask us to trust Him with some legitimately hard things. And in those seasons, even if they’re difficult, we can choose to trust that God will provide good things because He loves us and chooses to honor our faith.

Thankfully there are some practical things we can do to learn to trust God more. Ask God for big, impossible things. Even if it’s hard to believe that He will do it. Because when you ask Him, it shows that you have that mustard seed of faith that He can do the impossible. Another thing I do is write my prayers down so that I can see when they’ve been answered. It’s so amazing to see how faithful God is time and time again. And being able to live in that testimony of His goodness is incredible. And lastly, just ask Him to increase your faith. He wants that for you, so He’ll do it!

God, I just ask that You will grow my faith. I want to trust You and depend on You more and more. Please give me the strength to hope for the impossible. I love You. Amen.
