When you hear the word 'light' what do you think of? Bright? Illumination? Not dark? Those and a few others were the first to come to my mind. But, I think in these verses, John is using to word light to reference truth. If God is light, then that means that He is the source and measure of all that is true-that He created truth and goodness. So the first point of these verses is Truth=God=Light.
When I think about the word 'light' from a spiritual standpoint, different words come to my mind. Things like joy, safety, hope. The main purpose of light, why it was created, was to see and to ultimately avoid danger. Light changes our perspective and keeps us safe and full of hope and excited to take the next step. All of these things describe God and what He is in our lives. The light that keeps us safe and guides us through life.
God = Light
Since God=Light there can be no darkness in Him or near Him. Light beats darkness 100% of the time. Meaning, that if we draw near to Him, you will find hope and freedom and joy, so we don't have to worry about any surprises or hidden agendas when we draw near to Him, He is light and in the light we find goodness.
In verse 6 we get the application of understanding that God is light and I think it's is in there for a little friendly conviction. Just a quick reminder of what it means to say you follow Jesus. That if we say we are walking in the light, that we cannot be near the darkness because it is impossible for God to be in the darkness because He IS light. We cannot walk in the darkness while also following Jesus because they do not coexist. When you are walking in the darkness, you are being controlled by the desires of this world, but if you have fellowship with God it means that you see things the way God sees them, not like the world, and that you desire the things that God desires. Don't worry, hope is coming in verse 7.
God I ask that You would awaken me to the parts of my life that I am content with the darkness. I want my whole life and everything in it to be exposed to You light and truth. Thank you for your grace and for chances and opportunities to draw nearer to You and Your goodness. Amen.
