“I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.”

Phillipians 3:9 NLT

Whenever I read this passage, a wave of relief washes over me. The pressure is off! Our righteousness is not defined by how we obey the law. Our righteousness is determined by our faith in Jesus. The dicitonary definition of righteousness is "the quality of being morally right or justifiable". If following Jesus made sense by the world’s standards, we would have to obey every rule laid out in the bible perfectly in order to be considered morally right. Jesus turned that logic on its head when he came.

This matters to us because it sets us free from any condemnation we may feel from mistakes we’ve made in the past or will make in the future. We are not defined by our mistakes. We were made right the moment Jesus died on the cross and was risen from the dead. Our right standing with God depends on our faith in the promise that Jesus fufilled on that cross. The more we pursue God out of that fath, the more we will want to continue that pursuit. We will experience the freedom given to us on the cross by pursuing nad knowing God. We won't be worried about following rules anymore, we will just be seeking and knowing God.

Father, I pray that you would give us grace to grow in our faith. I ask that you would set us free from any way we feel crippled by the "rules" we think we have to follow. God I ask that you would show each of us what your sacrafice meant for us personally. Thank you. We love you.
