Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.
James 1:16-18 NIV
In the verses leading up to this, James has described how it is easy for us to place blame on God during difficult times in life. He begins verse sixteen by telling us to not be deceived by these thoughts. One of our first reactions when life isn't what we think it should be, or quite frankly, sucks, is to place the blame for that on God. It is easy to place blame on God when we see evil in our life, or evil in the world around us. James tells us to focus instead on our good and loving heavenly Father who only gives good and perfect gifts to the world.
Satan loves to sneak into our thoughts and emotions whenever we are looking for explanations on why our lives are the way they are. It is in the moments where life isn't great that we begin to look for reasons why. Too many times the blame ends up on God. In those times, let yourself be reminded that you are in a vulnerable position and the enemy is going to do all that he can to convince you that God isn't good and that he isn't who he says he is. Verse seventeen says God doesn't change like shifting shadows, but is consistent and true. We have the option to choose to believe that truth instead of the lies the enemy tries to feed us during hard times. God is always good, even when the world we live in tells us otherwise.
Time and time again in scripture, God tells us that he is good. One of the easiest ways to remind ourselves of God's goodness is by preaching the Gospel to ourselves. God is so good that he chose to die for us so that we could live intimately with him. Another way to remind ourselves of God's goodness is to look back at how he has come through in the past. Time and time again in the Bible God proves himself as good, and time and time again today God continues to prove that everyday in our lives. Your life might not look like what you want it to look like right now. Life might be difficult. If life isn't difficult right now, prepare yourself for when it will be. The easiest way to fight the lie that God isn't good is by remembering what Jesus did on the cross for you and how God has come through in the past.
To end you can pray this...
God reveal your goodness to me in my life. I want to see your goodness every day that I live my life. Remind me of times that you came through in the past and help me to recognize the voice of the enemy trying to come against who you say you are. You are good. I love You. Amen.
