But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
— John 16:7 NIV

Read the entire chapter here.

Let me paint this picture: Have you ever had a friend about whom you have said the words “I can’t live without *insert name*” or “I don’t know what I did before I met *insert person*”? That’s how people felt when Jesus said He was going away. They didn’t know how they were going to live without Jesus nor did they feel like they could continue without the counsel of Jesus. Back to my analogy for a second, what if the person you said you couldn’t live without said the words “it’s better that I go away?” You’d probably say “hold on..what??” But that’s what Jesus said. The man who came from a virgin birth, performed miracles, and fed the masses said: “it is better that I go away.” He follows this incredibly bold statement with “the Helper (Advocate, in some translations) is coming.” The Helper, the Holy Spirit. Jesus said that it was better if He goes away so that the Holy Spirit could be deposited inside of us. The Holy Spirit is God with us all of the time, leading us, convicting us, giving us the ability to love well. Jesus gives us the example of how to love well, the Holy Spirit gives us the ability to actually do that.

Later on in John 16, Jesus says “take heart; I have overcome the world.” This is potentially one of my favorite verses of the whole Bible. Jesus..the man who came to bridge the gap between God and mankind, the man who was scorned over and over again, the man who wasn’t trusted in his hometown -He overcame the world. He literally beat death. Talk about a conqueror!!!

First, my prayer for you is that you would always let the Holy Spirit lead you into love, that time and time again you would ask the Holy Spirit to show you how to love your friends, your family, your neighbors, your enemies, the strangers you haven’t even met yet, and above all God really well. But mostly, my prayer for you is that you would come into an understanding that no matter what comes against you in life, whether present circumstances or future trials, that you would know because the Holy Spirit lives within you, that you too can overcome the world. We are more than conquerors!
