This passage in Colossians comes from one of my favorite chapters in Paul’s letters. Here, he presents the importance of integrity and excellence in every aspect of our life. It’s easy to give mediocre effort when the only focus is to get something done, but God cares much more about our hearts in the process. The end goal of our work is to be able to say that we served God and worked with excellence.
working with excellence
Think of a husband and wife who are celebrating an anniversary. The husband waits until the day of the anniversary to get a gift for his wife, and in his rush he scribbles a short note on a piece of paper and prepares oven-baked pizza for dinner. The lack of effort in his gift doesn’t show his wife as much love as he probably would desire. For us, when we work with excellence and effort, we are reflecting a deep love that we have for the Lord. Please read Matthew 25:34-40 to see Jesus’s perspective on this passage. Jesus makes a powerful statement that has forever changed the way I view the opportunities I am given. Seriously, read it!
Laziness and apathy oppose God’s call for us to work with excellence and integrity. Half-hearted efforts offer us no benefit, but when we work with all our heart, God promises an inheritance and reward. I think one of the biggest rewards he gives us is deep purpose and fulfillment in Christ. Embody excellence in everything; you will be blessed.
God, thank you that you did not make us for mediocrity. You call us your masterpieces, so I pray that our work and service is a reflection of the excellence you put in us. I pray that laziness is replaced with your purpose. We love you! Amen
