I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

“I have learned to be content…” This is the heart of what Paul is saying here. Paul has experienced an extreme wealth and an extreme poverty financially, emotionally and spiritually. He has been through it all. Yet he has learned to be content regardless of circumstance. How? Because he knew he could “do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” He knew he was sustained in Christ no matter what!

In our lives we will face an endless amount of circumstances and whether they are easy or difficult the power and promise of Jesus will be fulfilled through our contentment. We will be truly free, meaning we are unaffected by circumstance or environment. The only thing affecting us is the reality of Jesus. That is the place where we want to be.

Seek out this place. Seek to be content through everything and in everything. From this place you will begin to see your appetite for this world fade. You will know this earth cannot fulfill or satisfy your desires. Jesus will consume all that you want. He will become what you crave. Now you are always content because the one thing you crave is the one thing you have an infinite supply of. Jesus.

Jesus, teach me to be content in any situation. Whether I have much or little, let me be full on you. Lead me to a place where all I crave is you. Show me how faithful you are to fill me when I come to you. Thank you that you are enough. You are all I need.
